What is Medical Astrology?

Medical astrology — in the Vedic tradition known as Āyur Vidyā — is the study of how planetary placements, signs, and cosmic cycles correspond to physiology, pathology, and the healing process.

At its heart, medical astrology operates on the ancient principle of correspondence: the macrocosm (cosmos) and microcosm (human body) are mirror images of each other. The same archetypal energies that govern celestial movement are believed to govern biological systems, endocrine function, organ vitality, and cycles of health and disease.

This is not a replacement for clinical medicine. Rather, it functions as a complementary interpretive lens — a symbolic map pointing toward constitutional tendencies, vulnerable organ systems, and timing windows relevant to health. Ancient physicians from Hippocrates to Avicenna took it seriously; modern integrative practitioners are revisiting it with new eyes.

“The stars incline, they do not compel. Yet to know one’s celestial constitution is to know the soil in which health or disease will most naturally take root.”
— Paracelsus, Astronomia Magna, 1537

Core Assumptions

🌐

Correspondence

Each planet, sign, and house governs specific body parts, organ systems, and physiological processes.

Timing

Planetary periods (dashas), transits, and eclipses create windows of heightened vulnerability or accelerated healing.

🌿

Constitution

The natal chart reveals inherent constitutional strengths and weaknesses — a biological blueprint shaped at birth.

⚖️

Balance

Disease arises from imbalance — whether planetary affliction, dosha excess, or disrupted elemental harmony.

💊

Remediation

Gems, herbs, colours, mantras, and dietary adjustments correspond to planetary energies and can restore balance.

🔁

Cycles

Health follows cosmic rhythms — lunar cycles, seasonal shifts, and the 19-year Saros cycle all carry physiological relevance.

A 5,000-Year Lineage

From Mesopotamian omen texts to Greek iatromathematics, from the Charaka Saṃhitā to Renaissance medicine, the marriage of stars and healing is among the oldest intellectual traditions in human history.

Ancient Origins

  • Mesopotamia (~3000 BCE): Babylonian healers used planetary omens to predict epidemics and individual illness. The liver was mapped to heaven; the bārûtu divination texts correlate heavenly signs with bodily afflictions.
  • Egypt (~2500 BCE): Decans — 36 divisions of the zodiac — each ruled ten degrees and a body part. Egyptian healing papyri reference stellar timing for medical procedures.
  • Greece (~400 BCE): Hippocrates declared that “a physician without knowledge of astrology has no right to call himself a physician.” Galen systematised the relationship between the four humours and the planets.
  • India (~1500 BCE): The Ṛgveda links Navagrahas to disease. The Atharvaveda contains hymns to planets as healers. Āyurveda and Jyotiṣa developed as sister sciences (upāṅgas of the Vedas).

Medieval to Modern

  • Islamic Golden Age (800–1200 CE): Ibn Sīnā’s Canon of Medicine integrates astrological timing into surgical decisions and drug administration. Al-Kindi wrote on stellar medicine.
  • Medieval Europe (1100–1500 CE): European universities required astronomy/astrology for medical degrees. The Theatrum Sanitatis and Iatromathematica were standard medical texts.
  • Renaissance (1500–1700 CE): Paracelsus revolutionised medical astrology with his doctrine of signatures linking planets to herbs and organ systems. Nicholas Culpeper catalogued thousands of herbs by planetary ruler.
  • Modern Revival: Reinvigorated by 20th-century figures like Reinhold Ebertin (Combination of Stellar Influences), and further explored by researchers in chronobiology and the study of circadian rhythms.

Āyur Jyotiṣa: The Vedic Science of Life

In Vedic astrology, health is inseparable from dharma, karma, and the subtle energy body. The natal chart is a karmic blueprint of one’s constitutional nature.

The primary tools in Vedic medical astrology are the lagna (ascendant), the 6th house (disease), the 8th house (chronic illness, surgery, longevity), and the 12th house (hospitalisation, hidden ailments, loss of vitality). The Moon governs the mind and body fluids; the Sun represents the prāṇa — vital force.

Key Vedic Medical Concepts

Prāṇa & Vital Force

The Sun is the cosmic source of prāṇa. A strong, unafflicted Sun in the natal chart indicates robust vital energy and immunity. A weakened Sun — placed in the 6th, 8th, or 12th, or aspected by malefics — can indicate low stamina, poor circulation, or susceptibility to fever and inflammatory conditions.

The Moon, meanwhile, governs ojas — the subtle essence of immunity and mental wellbeing. A strong Moon fosters emotional resilience and fluid balance. A weak or afflicted Moon can manifest as anxiety, auto-immune tendencies, menstrual irregularities, or lymphatic congestion.

Grahas as Physicians & Pathogens

In Jyotiṣa, each of the nine planets (Navagrahas) carries both a healing and a disease potential depending on its condition in the chart. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, strong Moon) generally promote health and recovery. Malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) can indicate disease when they afflict the ascendant, ascendant lord, or the 6th/8th/12th houses and their lords.

Rahu and Ketu — the shadow planets — are particularly important in medical astrology. Rahu governs mysterious, viral, or miasmatic diseases; Ketu governs sudden acute conditions, parasites, and spiritual-karmic illness.

The Ashtakavarga System

The Ashtakavarga is a unique Vedic point-scoring system that quantifies planetary strength across all twelve houses. In medical astrology, low Ashtakavarga scores in the ascendant or 6th/8th house can indicate extended illness or slow recovery. The system also helps identify peak vulnerability windows during planetary transits.

Vimshottari Dasha & Disease Timing

The Vimshottari dasha system divides life into 120-year planetary periods, each ruled by one of the nine grahas. Medical astrologers examine:

  • The Mahadasha (major period) planet’s natural significations and its chart placement.
  • The Antardasha (sub-period) for triggering events — particularly sub-periods of malefics within a 6th or 8th lord dasha.
  • Pratyantardasha (sub-sub periods) for precision timing of acute medical events.
  • Transits of Saturn and Jupiter over the natal Moon, ascendant, or 6th/8th house as secondary timing tools.

The Tridosha & Planetary Correspondence

Āyurveda’s three fundamental bio-energies — Vāta, Pitta, and Kapha — each correspond to specific planets. The chart reveals one’s prakriti (constitution) and vikruti (current imbalance).

VātaAir + Ether

Planetary Rulers: Saturn, RahuGoverns all movement — nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, elimination. Vāta imbalance produces anxiety, insomnia, dryness, constipation, joint pain, and neurological disorders.

Afflicted Indicators: Saturn conjunct/aspecting ascendant or Moon; Rahu in 6th or 12th house; Saturn as 6th or 8th lord active in dasha.

Nervous SystemJoints & BonesColonRespiratory

PittaFire + Water

Planetary Rulers: Sun, Mars, KetuGoverns metabolism, digestion, temperature regulation, vision, and intelligence. Pitta imbalance produces inflammation, ulcers, liver disorders, skin rashes, fevers, anger, and hypertension.

Afflicted Indicators: Sun or Mars in fiery signs in the 6th; Mars conjunct ascendant lord; Ketu in the 5th or 9th triggering inflammatory cycles.

Liver & Gall BladderBloodSkinEyes

KaphaWater + Earth

Planetary Rulers: Moon, Jupiter, VenusGoverns structure, lubrication, immunity (ojas), and tissue formation. Kapha imbalance produces obesity, congestion, diabetes, lymphatic stagnation, depression, and sluggishness.

Afflicted Indicators: Moon in water signs with Jupiter overloaded; Venus-Moon conjunction in Kapha signs under Saturn’s aspect; Jupiter as 6th lord expanding disease.

Planetary Rulerships of Vitamins & Minerals

Eileen Nauman’s landmark work identified specific vitamins and minerals under each planet’s rulership. Afflicted planets — especially through hard aspects — may indicate deficiency or excess of their corresponding nutrients, offering a nutritional diagnosis layer to chart interpretation.

When a planet is stressed by conjunction, square, opposition, or inconjunct to a malefic, its associated nutrients are at risk of depletion or imbalance. The inconjunct (150°) is considered the primary health aspect — it indicates poor absorption and a high bodily demand for the nutrients ruled by the planets involved. Nauman writes that people with two or more inconjuncts in their charts are prone to disease at some point in their lives, with the inconjunct planet showing where deficiency will most likely concentrate.

Planet Vitamins Ruled Minerals Ruled Deficiency Consequences
☉ Sun Vitamin A, Vitamin D Iodine, Magnesium Heart ailments (angina, atherosclerosis), bone weakness, eye disorders, impaired immunity. Magnesium deficiency: muscle cramping, adrenal stress, death in extreme cases.
☽ Moon Riboflavin (B-2) Potassium Fluid imbalances, weight fluctuation, irritability around the full Moon, oedema, poor cell membrane function. Potassium deficit disrupts sodium–fluid exchange.
☿ Mercury Thiamine (B-1) Nervous tension, poor nerve conduction, lowered HCl in stomach causing incomplete digestion, colitis, flatulence, Bell’s palsy, thyroid co-involvement, heart complications.
♀ Venus Niacin (B-3), Vitamin E Copper Vascular weakness (varicose veins, phlebitis, embolism), poor muscle tone, skin deterioration, kidney acid–alkaline imbalance, reduced red blood cell formation.
♂ Mars B-12, Folic Acid, Fatty Acids (Vit. F) Chlorine, Cobalt, Iron, Molybdenum, Phosphorus, Selenium, Sodium Anaemia, poor red blood cell production, low energy, impaired nerve function, excess or deficit of acid–alkaline balance, muscle and ligament weakness.
♃ Jupiter B-6, Biotin, Cholin, Inositol, Pangamic Acid (B-15) Chromium, Manganese, Zinc Liver disease (cirrhosis without cholin/inositol), poor fat metabolism, diabetes and hypoglycaemia, atherosclerosis, fertility problems, stunted growth, hair loss.
♄ Saturn Vitamin C, Vitamin K, PABA, Bioflavonoids (Vit. P) Calcium, Fluorine, Sulfur, Vanadium Collagen breakdown (arthritis, osteoporosis, psoriasis), haemorrhaging, poor wound healing, skin aging, tooth decay, hair and nail deterioration, coagulation failure.
♅ Uranus Rules nerve impulse transmission between synapses. No specific vitamin/mineral rulership assigned; governs the electrical quality of nerve action rather than nutritional supply.
♆ Neptune Pantothenic Acid, Laetrile (B-17) Adrenal exhaustion, unexplained fatigue (not quite sick, not quite well), increased toxicity from antibiotics, unclear or misdiagnosed conditions, sensitivity to all medications.
♇ Pluto Orotic Acid (B-13) Cellular metabolic disruption, abnormal red/white blood cell formation, enzyme production failure, endocrine system breakdown — the deepest level of biochemical transformation.

Drug Sensitivity & Dosage Indicators

Nauman identifies several chart signatures that indicate a person requires lower than normal medication dosages — roughly half the standard dose. These are important flags for both pharmaceutical and natural treatments:

  • Neptune conjunct the Ascendant or within 8° of the 1st or 10th house cusp — highly drug-sensitive constitution; natural and homeopathic approaches preferred.
  • Neptune in the 6th house in hard aspect to 2+ planets — allergic reactions to drugs likely; start all treatments at ½ dose.
  • Moon as singleton, or on the 1st/10th house cusp within 8° — emotionally and physically sensitive; fluids and medications act more powerfully.
  • Moon conjunct Neptune — extreme drug sensitivity; the person responds to homeopathic and subtle-energy treatments more than pharmaceutical ones.
  • Planets in Pisces or Virgo — these signs are naturally drug-sensitive; their polar relationship makes the body’s boundary between threshold and overdose very narrow.
  • Mutable Cross dominant charts — as a whole, Mutable Cross individuals (Gemini/Virgo/Sagittarius/Pisces emphasis) typically need ½ the normal dose; overdosing is common and adverse reactions frequent.

The Twelve Signs & the Body

The zodiac is mapped head-to-toe on the human body. Each sign governs specific bones, muscles, arteries, veins, and physiological processes — and is paired with a Schuessler cell salt for targeted mineral support.

Aries / MeṣaFire · Cardinal · Mars

Head, brain, motor centres, skull, face, temporal arteries, cephalic veins. Rules epilepsy, encephalitis, vertigo, headaches, cerebral congestion, toxaemia, blood congestion in the head. Cell Salt: Kali Phosphoricum.

Taurus / VṛṣabhaEarth · Fixed · Venus

Throat, neck, thyroid (co-ruled with Mercury), tonsils, adenoids, larynx, cervical vertebrae, jugular veins. Hyper/hypothyroid, laryngitis, tonsillitis, choking, voice loss. Cell Salt: Natrum Sulphuricum.

Gemini / MithunaAir · Mutable · Mercury

Lungs, bronchi, arms, shoulders, hands, all body tubes (fallopian, eustachian, ureters, bronchial, urethra), peripheral nervous system. Asthma, bronchitis, pleurisy, tube blockages, carpal disorders. Cell Salt: Kali Muriaticum.

Cancer / KarkaṭaWater · Cardinal · Moon

Stomach, breasts, chest, bone marrow, brain and organ membranes, glycogen storage, posterior pituitary, body coverings. Gastric ailments, fluid retention, breast conditions, anaemia, hormonal disruption. Cell Salt: Calcarea Fluorica.

Leo / SiṃhaFire · Fixed · Sun

Heart (the one organ Leo uniquely rules), aorta, dorsal vertebrae, back muscles, coronary arteries. Heart disease in all forms, arrhythmia, angina, back conditions. Reflex link to Aquarius (spinal cord). Cell Salt: Magnesia Phosphorica.

Virgo / KanyāEarth · Mutable · Mercury

Pancreas, intestinal tract, duodenum, spleen, liver enzyme function, assimilation. Diabetes, hypoglycaemia, colitis, malabsorption, IBS. People with Virgo planets are often drug-sensitive — they require minimal medication. Cell Salt: Kali Sulphuricum.

Libra / TulāAir · Cardinal · Venus

Kidneys, adrenal glands, lumbar vertebrae, acid–alkaline metabolism. Kidney disease is the root cause of most Cardinal Cross ailments. Toxaemia from poor filtration can masquerade as blood disorders, skin rashes, or even pseudo-leukaemia. Cell Salt: Natrum Phosphoricum.

Scorpio / VṛścikaWater · Fixed · Mars/Ketu

Colon (primary), reproductive organs, bladder, prostate, pelvis. The colon is the root cause of most Fixed Cross diseases — caked fecal matter triggers heart strain, thyroid disruption, cataracts, and back pain via toxic reabsorption. Cell Salt: Calcarea Sulphurica.

Sagittarius / DhanuFire · Mutable · Jupiter

Hips, thighs, femur, sciatic nerve, great saphenous vein, expiratory lung function. Sciatica, hip disease, gout, thigh injuries, poor exhalation. Reflex relationship with Gemini (inhalation). Cell Salt: Silicea.

Capricorn / MakaraEarth · Cardinal · Saturn

Knees, gallbladder (bile production and fat emulsification), anterior pituitary. Gallbladder dysfunction mimics heart attacks and pleurisy. Arthritis in knees is common. Cell Salt: Calcarea Phosphorica.

Aquarius / KumbhaAir · Fixed · Saturn/Rahu

Calves, ankles, spinal cord (protected by Leo’s vertebrae), oxygenation of blood, rods and cones of eyes. Colon toxaemia (Scorpio reflex) can cause glaucoma, cataracts, varicose veins, and nerve disease (MS, lateral sclerosis). Cell Salt: Natrum Muriaticum.

Pisces / MīnaWater · Mutable · Jupiter/Ketu

Feet, complete lymph gland system, mucous production, thymus. Nauman calls Pisces “the health-poor sign of the zodiac.” Lymph congestion causes swollen glands mistaken for tumours. Healing requires water, rest, and moderation. Cell Salt: Ferrum Phosphoricum.

The Three Medical Crosses

The crosses (quadruplicities) are among the most practically useful tools in medical astrology. By tallying how many planets occupy cardinal, fixed, or mutable signs, the medical astrologer can identify the root cause of illness and the patient’s likely response to treatment — insights developed extensively by Eileen Nauman.

The dominant cross is found by counting planetary placements in cardinal, fixed, and mutable signs and houses. The highest tally indicates the active cross. If planets occupy only three arms of a cross, the empty arm often reveals the most active disease location. About 20% of charts show a double-cross phenomenon, requiring both patterns to be addressed.

Cardinal CrossAries · Cancer · Libra · Capricorn

Root Cause: Kidneys (Libra). Toxaemia from poor renal filtration underlies most Cardinal Cross ailments. Secondary: gallbladder (Capricorn).Disease Character: Organ-based, relatively quick to manifest and respond to treatment. Cardinal Cross people tend to be cooperative patients, willing to try new approaches including herbal and homeopathic remedies.

Patient Type: Fighters who don’t give up. Aries/Capricorn types want direct answers; Cancer/Libra types need diplomatic handling. Generally respond well to standard dosages.

Fixed CrossTaurus · Leo · Scorpio · Aquarius

Root Cause: Colon (Scorpio). Fecal toxaemia drives heart disease, thyroid disruption, cataracts (Aquarius), and back conditions (Leo). Secondary: thyroid (Taurus).Disease Character: Chronic, slow to develop (30+ years) and slow to heal. Cancer is most commonly linked with this cross. Toxins are held in rather than expelled — a centripetal pattern.

Patient Type: Stubborn, resistant to change. May need 2–3× normal medication doses. Difficult to alter diet. But once committed, follow regimens religiously without needing encouragement.

Mutable CrossGemini · Virgo · Sagittarius · Pisces

Root Cause: Lymph gland system (Pisces). Congestion creates swollen glands, fatigue, frequent colds, and mysterious lumps. Co-primary: pancreas (Virgo) — hypoglycaemia and diabetes are common.Disease Character: Acute, sudden, centrifugal — diseases are thrown off quickly via fevers and infections. Easy cure rate if the person is disciplined, but they rarely are.

Patient Type: Need ½ normal medication dose; sensitive to taste, smell, texture. Eager to try anything but rarely finish a treatment. Diet is the most effective approach; respond well to homeopathy and cell salts.

Houses of Health & Disease

In Nauman’s framework, the houses explain why disease manifests — revealing the psychological and circumstantial roots of physical ailments. The signs show where; the planets show how; the houses show why.

House Medical Significance Body Area / Domain Psychosocial Root of Illness
1st — Lagna Overall vitality, constitution, the physical body itself Head, overall physique, life force Over-drive and rash use of energy without rest. 1st House people must learn moderation. Neptune here (within 8°) indicates drug sensitivity — use ½ doses.
2nd Diet, nutrition, oral health, self-worth expressed through possessions Face, right eye, mouth, teeth, throat Obsessive need to prove self-worth through achievement; neglected diet, gluttony after success, excess sugar and carbohydrates.
3rd Nervous system, immediate environment stress Shoulders, arms, hands, local nervous tissue Environmental demands — being the “Dear Abby” for siblings and neighbours. Over-peopling leads to nerve-based ailments. Must learn to say no.
4th Emotional health, home environment, parental conditioning Chest, stomach (emotional centre) Repressed anger from parental conditioning. Neurosis builds silently; chronic ailments manifest in midlife (42–49) if unaddressed. Therapy essential.
5th Heart health, creative life force, emotional love needs Heart, back, spine Unfulfilled need for love leads to chaotic relationships and loneliness. Illness comes from unrecognised insecurity; self-love and creative expression are the cure.
6th — Roga Primary house of acute disease, daily health habits, immunity battles Lower abdomen, intestines Excessive guilt and self-sacrifice for others’ approval. Nerve ailments, sugar problems, intestinal disorders. Neptune here (hard aspects) = drug allergies, use ½ dose.
7th Partnership stress, co-dependency health impact Kidneys, lower back (Libra reflex) Submerging personal identity for a partner’s needs. Health suffers when self-identification is given up; must examine motivations for partnerships honestly.
8th — Āyus Chronic and hidden disease, surgery, longevity, transformation Sexual organs, elimination, deep cellular processes Psychological intensity and emotional scarring held deep in subconscious. Chronic ailments emerge 42–49. Psychological counselling is the primary remedy.
9th Faith, belief, higher mind — least disease-prone house Hips, thighs, sciatic nerve (Sagittarius) Positive spiritual attitude protects health. Negative beliefs and loss of faith can bring on ailments. “We are what we think.”
10th Career pressure, societal demands, public identity stress Knees, skeletal structure, skin (Capricorn) Chronic ailments from working 12–16 hours daily to meet parental and societal expectations. Neptune within 8° of Midheaven = drug-sensitive individual.
11th Generally not disease-prone; group and friendship stress Calves, ankles, circulatory system (Aquarius) Working toward hopes and wishes through organisations. Inordinate group demands can cause stress, but this house rarely generates serious illness alone.
12th — Vyaya Hospitalisation, hidden and subconscious illness, confinement Feet, lymphatics, sleep quality Introversion and hidden emotions ferment until physical crisis forces release. Talking therapy and radical honesty about feelings prevents hospitalisation.

“When the lord of the ascendant and the lord of the sixth house are in mutual aspect or conjunction, and a malefic transits that conjunction — the body becomes a battlefield.”
— Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, Chapter on Health

Hard Aspects & Disease

The hard aspects — conjunction, square, opposition, and above all the inconjunct — indicate where energy is blocked, nutrients are depleted, and physical ailments will eventually manifest. The sign shows location; the aspect shows severity.

The Four Hard Aspects

  • Conjunction (0°): A merging of two planetary energies — twice the nutritional demand, twice the potential excess or deficiency. Pluto conjunctions deserve special scrutiny; Neptune conjunctions with the Sun, Moon, Mars, or Saturn are strong health indicators.
  • Square (90°): Stress applied between two planetary functions — can indicate loss or overuse of corresponding vitamins and minerals. A stumbling block that can become a building block with correct diet and awareness.
  • Opposition (180°): An imbalance where one planet receives more energy than the other. One of the two planets will be nutrient-deficient; when the polarity is balanced, no deficiency exists. Oppositions clearly show what dietary correction is needed.
  • Inconjunct / Quincunx (150°): The primary health aspect — the most difficult and impregnable. Two or more inconjuncts in a chart predispose a person to disease. A yod (two planets sextile, both inconjunct a third) shows the illness location at the apex planet. Indicates very poor nutrient absorption and a high demand for the vitamins/minerals of the planets involved.

The Inconjunct: Pressure Cooker of Health

The inconjunct operates like a pressure cooker: accumulating tension that must eventually escape, usually through illness. On a psychological level, it indicates a person who cannot easily identify their internal needs or recognise suppressed emotions. The emotional buildup ultimately manifests somatically.

On a purely physical level, the inconjunct indicates very poor absorption of nutrients — an enormous appetite for the vitamins and minerals ruled by the planets in aspect. A tailor-made nutritional protocol from a physician is essential.

The most medically potent inconjuncts are: Sun–Moon, Sun–Saturn, Sun–Neptune, Moon–Pluto, Mars–Saturn, Mars–Pluto, Jupiter–Saturn, and Saturn–Neptune. These combinations consistently appear in serious health histories.

Semi-Square & Sesquiquadrant

The semi-square (45°) and sesquiquadrant (135°) produce a lower-grade irritation that gradually weakens an organ or metabolic function. Alone they will not trigger full-blown illness, but when a major progressed aspect later activates the same area, these minor aspects can accelerate the breakdown significantly.

Surgical Timing: Ten Rules

The positions of the planets and luminaries determine the best and worst times for surgery. These rules, compiled by Eileen Nauman from classical and observational sources, are among the most practically applied principles in Western medical astrology.

🌑

Rule 1 — New Moon Window

Plan surgery within five days before or after the New Moon. Body fluids are at their lowest ebb, minimising risk of swelling, bruising, and excessive bleeding.

🌕

Rule 2 — Avoid Full Moon

Never schedule surgery within five days before or after the Full Moon. Body fluids peak at this time — excessive swelling, haemorrhaging, and wound seepage are significantly more likely.

Rule 3 — Void of Course Moon

Avoid surgery on any day the Moon is void of course. High probability that the procedure will not be performed correctly, unexpected complications will arise, or a second operation will become necessary.

Rule 4 — Moon Sign & Body Part

Do not operate on the body part ruled by the sign the Moon (or Sun) is currently transiting. Also avoid the opposite sign — there is a definite reflex relationship between polar signs.

Rule 5 — Avoid Mutable Moon

Do not schedule surgery when the Moon transits a mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). Too much flexibility — a gallbladder operation may turn into an appendectomy mid-procedure.

Rule 6 — Prefer Fixed Moon

Plan surgery when the transiting Moon is in a fixed sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). The operation is more likely to proceed as planned, the surgeon’s hands steadier, complications fewer.

Rule 7 — Moon Combustion

Avoid surgery when the transiting Moon is within 17° of the natal Sun, natal Moon, or natal Mars. This combustion zone intensifies inflammatory and haemorrhagic risk.

Rule 8 — Malefic Lunar Aspects

Do not operate when the transiting Moon is square, opposite, or inconjunct to the natal or transiting Sun, Mars, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, or Pluto. Mars tension = excess bleeding; Saturn tension = chronic complications.

Rule 9 — Benefic Lunar Aspects

Seek a date when the Moon is sextile or trine natal/transiting Venus, Mars, or Jupiter. These aspects support a smooth procedure. Moon trine Mars specifically indicates a surgeon with a quick, clean, skilled hand.

☿ ♂

Rule 10 — Retrograde Planets

Avoid surgery when Mercury or Mars is retrograde. Mercury retrograde: wrong drugs, miscommunications between surgical team, possible second operation needed. Mars retrograde: surgeons are unsteady and distracted; risk of heavy blood loss or haemorrhage.

The 12 Cell Salts & Astrology

Cell salts are inorganic mineral salts found in every cell of the body, essential for all metabolism. Dr. Wilhelm Schuessler identified 12 as critical to health. Astrologers assign one to each zodiac sign — a correspondence known in Vedic India since ancient times and systematised in the West in the early 19th century.

Nauman advises two approaches for determining cell salt needs: first, match the person’s symptoms against the cell salt’s deficiency profile; second, confirm with the natal chart — Saturn’s sign placement always indicates a mineral shortage, and the South Node shows inherent “leaks.” Bob Mulligan’s expanded method examines Sun, Moon, Saturn, South Node, and Mercury — and their opposite signs — to establish a full cell salt protocol.

Sign Cell Salt Chemical Name Key Function & Deficiency Symptoms
♈ Aries Kali Phosphoricum Potassium Phosphate Feeds nerve and brain cells; treats nerve exhaustion, anxiety, depression, grey brain matter depletion. Deficiency: mental fatigue, paralytic conditions, offensive body odour, grey matter deterioration.
♉ Taurus Natrum Sulphuricum Sodium Sulphate Regulates fluid metabolism and bile production; essential to liver health. Deficiency: biliousness, liver sluggishness, humid conditions worsen symptoms, greenish coating on tongue.
♊ Gemini Kali Muriaticum Potassium Chloride Unites with albumin to form fibrin for blood clotting and cell shape maintenance. Deficiency: thick white mucous discharges, swollen lymph glands, earaches, constipation from fatty foods, white-coated tongue.
♋ Cancer Calcarea Fluorica Calcium Fluoride Maintains elasticity of bones, tooth enamel, skin, muscles, and blood vessel walls. Deficiency: cracked lips, varicose veins, hardened arteries, loose teeth, receding gums, cataracts, blurred vision.
♌ Leo Magnesia Phosphorica Magnesium Phosphate The anti-spasmodic cell salt — relieves nerve pains, cramps, and spasms. Deficiency: cardiac cramps, neuralgia, hiccoughs, sharp shooting pains relieved by warmth and pressure.
♍ Virgo Kali Sulphuricum Potassium Sulphate Carries oxygen to cells; governs the third stage of inflammation and desquamation of epithelial cells. Deficiency: yellow, slimy discharges, dandruff, psoriasis, scaling skin, catarrhal conditions.
♎ Libra Natrum Phosphoricum Sodium Phosphate Regulates the acid–alkaline balance throughout the body. Deficiency: acidic conditions, sour breath, golden-yellow coating on tongue, rheumatic conditions, digestive hyperacidity.
♏ Scorpio Calcarea Sulphurica Calcium Sulphate Destroys worn-out red blood cells; prevents toxin accumulation through skin and mucous membranes. Deficiency: slow-healing wounds, boils, abscesses, pimples, thick yellow discharges, corneal cloudiness.
♐ Sagittarius Silicea Silicon Dioxide Strengthens connective tissue; cleanser and eliminator of non-functional matter. Caution: most powerful cell salt — use under professional supervision as it has a cutting/slicing action. Deficiency: abscesses, brittle nails, offensive perspiration, lack of “grit”.
♑ Capricorn Calcarea Phosphorica Calcium Phosphate The “bone remedy” — 57% of all bones are calcarea phosphorica. Supports blood corpuscle formation and gastric secretions. Deficiency: bone disorders, teething problems, simple anaemia, cold extremities, flatulence, freckles.
♒ Aquarius Natrum Muriaticum Sodium Chloride Controls fluid distribution throughout all cells. Deficiency: emotional hypersensitivity, watery discharges, uncontrollable laughter or tears, headaches from sunrise to noon, mapped tongue, constipation.
♓ Pisces Ferrum Phosphoricum Iron Phosphate First-response anti-inflammatory; strengthens red blood cells to fight infection. Deficiency: anaemia, pallor, predisposition to colds, blurred vision, extreme noise sensitivity, fatigue, haemorrhage tendency.

Fixed Stars & Medical Influence

Fixed stars must be conjunct a planet or angle within a very tight orb (ideally exact; 30 minutes maximum) to exert medical influence. Alone they are not primary indicators — the full chart must already lean in a disease direction for a fixed star to activate. Research in this area was pioneered by Reinhold Ebertin’s Fixed Stars and Their Interpretation.

Stars on the Midheaven or Ascendant deserve particular attention, as do stars conjunct natal Mars, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune. Eclipses can also amplify a fixed star’s power. All positions below are as of 1950 — add approximately 0°50′ per 50 years for current positions.

Fixed Star Position (1950) Planetary Nature Medical Influence
Deneb Kaitos 1° Aries Saturn Bodily and mental inhibition; chronic suppression of function.
El-Scheratain 3° Taurus Saturn / Mars Impulsiveness resulting in injury.
O-Nath 7° Taurus Mars / Saturn Severe injury, particularly falls, at some point in life.
Menkar 13° Taurus Saturn Throat and larynx problems when conjunct malefics.
Zanrak 23° Taurus Saturn Chronic illness; possible suicidal tendencies.
Algol 25° Taurus Saturn / Mars–Uranus–Pluto Considered the most dangerous fixed star. Chronic illness, dental problems, arthritis. Tragic influences likely when conjunct malefics.
Alcyone (Pleiades) 26° Taurus Moon / Mars Eyesight ailments including blindness; poor vision from early age.
Praesepe 6° Leo Moon / Mars / Neptune Poor eyesight, especially weak from childhood.
Kochab 12° Leo Mars / Saturn Extreme tension, nervous suffering, mental anguish.
Alphard 27° Leo Saturn / Venus / Neptune Extreme drug or poison sensitivity; animal/insect bite consequences; blood poisoning from toxins.
Alioth 8° Virgo Mars Birth complications; difficult labour and delivery.
Zosma 10° Virgo Venus / Saturn Toxin accumulation leading to disease; melancholia.
Denebola 21° Virgo Uranus Mental instability or gyrations when conjunct Mercury or Uranus.
Algorab 13° Libra Mars / Saturn Various illnesses ranging from mental to organic; chronic problems.

Uranian Planets & Medical Diagnosis

The eight Uranian planets — hypothetical points used in cosmobiological and Uranian astrology — add diagnostic precision when applied on the 90-degree dial. Nauman identifies three as medically essential: Hades, Admetos, and Apollon. Zeus and Vulcanus also carry health relevance.

Hades

The most medically serious Uranian planet. Rules disintegration, bacterial decay, waste, erosion, and wasting disease. When progressed Hades conjuncts another planet, a hidden problem is suddenly exposed. Associated with long-term, devastating illnesses — more serious in prognosis than Saturn. Has a positive face: strong Hades appears in the charts of skilled diagnosticians and physicians who can “find the pieces.”

🌱

Admetos

Rules the seed — illness simmering underground until conditions allow it to surface. Associated with unwanted pregnancies, suffocation, choking, coma, phobias, and conditions unknown to the patient. Frequently indicates the mother will fall ill within a family health crisis. On the positive side, a strong Admetos can give extraordinary tenacity in fighting disease.

✦✦

Apollon

Always indicates complications — secondary diagnoses and misdiagnoses. When progressed Apollon is active, the patient is usually already diagnosed but getting worse, or new complications are emerging. The glyph combines Gemini and Jupiter: multiple dimensions, more than one problem at once.

🔥

Zeus

A higher octave of Mars. Associated with the beginning of ailments, burns, explosions, gunshot wounds, and surgical operations. More often the cause of an injury than the injury itself — fires, accidents, firearms, and steam injuries show Zeus prominently.

🌋

Vulcanus

Like a volcano — a planet of immense energy. In illness, Vulcanus intensifies and amplifies whatever condition is already present, making it more obvious or worse. Positively, it bestows great recuperative energy and the will to fight back against illness. Takes on the characteristics of whatever planet it aspects.

🌐

Transpluto

Beyond Pluto in its transformative intensity — described by Charles Emerson as a planet of “uprooting trauma.” Michael Munkasey found it consistently linked with hypoglycaemia. Nauman’s own research confirms its activity in serious medical progressions. May act more on the psychological plane than the physical; mental breakdowns are noted when it is badly placed.

Modern Medical Astrology & Science

Contemporary practitioners integrate psychological astrology, chronobiology, and integrative medicine with traditional frameworks. The conversation between ancient wisdom and modern research continues to evolve.

Reinhold Ebertin’s Contribution

Reinhold Ebertin’s 1960 work Combination of Stellar Influences (COSI) was a landmark in systematic medical astrology. He compiled hundreds of midpoints and planetary combinations with their documented correlations to health conditions, removing the mystical language and focusing on observable patterns. His cosmobiological approach influenced an entire generation of medical astrologers in Germany and beyond.

Chronobiology Parallels

Chronobiology — the study of biological rhythms — offers fascinating parallel territory. The discovery of circadian, infradian, and ultradian rhythms confirms that biological systems operate on precise timing cycles governed by light, temperature, and geomagnetic forces. The 28-day lunar cycle’s resonance with the menstrual cycle, cortisol rhythms corresponding to solar angles, and the 12-year Jupiter cycle’s rough correspondence to immune system development are areas of ongoing interest.

Psychological Medical Astrology

Post-Jungian astrologers like Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas explored the psychosomatic dimension of medical astrology — how unresolved psychological complexes (mapped by the chart) may express somatically. Saturn’s association with depression and skeletal issues, Pluto’s link to cellular transformation and cancer (as psychic metaphor), and Neptune’s correspondence to immune ambiguity and fibromyalgia are explored in this framework.

Cosmobiology & Research

Michel Gauquelin’s extensive statistical studies in the 1950s–70s found correlations between the angular positions of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn at birth and professional vocation — with Mars showing significance for athletes and surgeons. While not directly medical, these studies opened the door to systematic empirical investigation of astrological claims.

Modern Planetary Rulerships (Outer Planets)

Uranus

Rules sudden and unexpected health events, neurological disruptions, autonomic nervous system, electrical body impulses. Associated with spasms, epilepsy, organ transplants, rare syndromes, and medical breakthroughs.

Neptune

Rules the immune system’s confusion (auto-immunity), drugs and anaesthesia, viruses, lymphatics, subtle toxicity. Associated with fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, addiction, food sensitivities, mysterious conditions.

Pluto

Rules cellular mutation, deep transformation, elimination at cellular level. Associated with cancer, endocrine disruption, surgery at deep levels, genetic conditions, and radical healing crises.
